You've seen the commercials and heard the slogan, "What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas". At first, the hustle and bustle of this booming city can intimidate any first time tourists into Vegas territory, but with a few tips, even new visitors can get around this city of lights. The first thing to do when planning a trip to Las Vegas is find information regarding transportation. Las Vegas features McCarranInternationalAirport, four miles within Las Vegas Boulevard, also known as "The Strip". Check with discount travel websites to lock in special deals or plan a trip in months that aren't busy with holidays or other festive events. Most hotels offer shuttle services to and from the airport, so it's only a matter of checking with your hotel of choice to see if this is offered. If the hotel doesn't offer this service, the airport shuttles run every 15-20 minutes and taxis are constantly available. Shuttle reservations can be made through the airport, so to avoid stress, check out these deals before flying into Vegas. As with any airport, there are car rental agencies, limo services and buses available at all hours of the day. Getting around Las Vegas is fairly easy, due to the fact that everything is located within walking distance of Las Vegas Boulevard. The Boulevard, or "The Strip" is divided into two main areas. The three and a half mile Strip features hotels and entertainment running from Russell Road to Charleston Boulevard, and then Downtown Las Vegas, which is located north of Charleston Boulevard until Washington Avenue, also known as the 'Original" Vegas. Buses run up and down the Strip, starting from MandalayBay and ending at the Fremont Street Experience. The new Double-Decker bus system is very affordable and stops at almost every hotel on both sides of the street, running at almost 7 minutes in between buses. Taxis are also another option, but may be more expensive, and the advantage of the taxi drivers is they will be able to take you anywhere, from the Strip and beyond. Two monorails are also available, but are limited in their destinations. One runs from MandalayBay through the Luxor hotel, and ends in Excalibur. The second runs from MGM Grand through to Bally's. Many visitors opt to walk, taking in each hotel as they go up and down the Strip. While this is a good way to experience Vegas, remember that the walk is long, so wear comfortable shoes! Driving is probably the worst option, especially as a tourist. The streets are packed all day, and unless you know exactly where you're going, streets are confusing and traffic is unbearable. Unless you're from a major city and know rush hour traffic, driving the strip is not recommend 10 a.m. All hotels feature a parking garage and valet services, so leaving your car is an easy reliable option. Las Vegas offers hotels for any budget. While some hotels range from thousands per night for ultimate luxury, you can still find nice, clean 3-4 star hotels for a reasonable price. Reserve your room at least a month or two in advance, and before you go, sign up for specials and Internet deals through hotel websites. Many hotels offer greatly reduced room rates, as well as packages with perks, including free meals, game money or spa and pool passes that you would most likely have to pay for without coupons. Really nice hotels for a good price include Excalibur, Luxor, New YorkNew York, Monte Carlo, and Bally's. Prices during the week are always cheaper than weekends, so if you can do it then, it is greatly advised. Many hotels also offer self-check in, which is quick and easy. With a swipe of the credit card you reserved the room with, you can get your room keys and coupon book, all without having to spend any time in long lines. Hotels off the Strip go for a cheaper price, but to fully experience life in Vegas, it is best to stay on the main boulevard. Tipping is also a big part of Las Vegas, whether it's for valet, bellhop, maids or even cocktail waitresses that offer free drinks throughout casinos. If you're not sure how to tip, give the standard 15-20 percent or a few dollars to any services within the hotels. As with an array of hotels, dining is also a large part of the Las Vegas experience. Restaurants vary from extremely high fine dining to cheap buffets. Check with hotels to see what they feature. Most world famous chefs now have their own restaurants in Vegas, so see which ones are best for your budget. Shopping is definitely a perk to an already awesome city. While most hotels have their designated shopping or gift areas, there are a few hotels that have great high-end shops. The Bellagio features shops like Armani, Chanel, Karl Lagerfeld, Hermes and Prada. The Venetian features over 70 stores and boutiques ranging from Louis Vuitton to Sephora, and the Forum shops at Caesars Palace features Christian Dior, Gucci, DKNY, Escada, FAO Schwarz and many other typical stores like Victoria's Secret. While in Vegas, it is a must to see at least one entertainment show, whether it be Blue Man Group, Cirque de Soliel, Celine Dion, or any other musical, comedy, or concert. As with other events, check online for special deals with tickets to sellers on the Internet or ticket vendors; it's usually cheaper and you get better seats than at the box office. There are also a variety of nightclubs in every hotel, most of which have a VIP list and steep cover charges. Get in line at least an hour before they open and check the dress code before you get there. Some good clubs are Ra in Luxor, Studio 54 in MGM, Rain at the Palms, Tangerine at Treasure Island, and Tao in The Venetian. If it's your first time in Las Vegas, spend a few minutes researching where to stay and what to do in order to find the best deal and save a little money for your next trip. I guarantee you'll want to come |
